Arts and Health Evaluation: Navigating the Landscape

A comprehensive mapping of what arts and health evaluation frameworks and toolkits exist, and advice for anyone wishing to evaluate their own project.

This resource provides a comprehensive mapping of what arts and health evaluation frameworks and toolkits exist, as well as provides general tips and advice. It is designed to support anyone interested in arts and health to navigate the landscape of evaluation.

The resource consists of five parts. In the first part, we explore what evaluation is and think about the broader approaches and contexts of arts and health evaluation. This includes exploring how a theory of change can be applied.

In part two, we introduce the evaluation cycle and provide an overview of key frameworks and how they can be used across a range of arts and health projects.

In part three, we present a table with detailed descriptions of 26 toolkits that we collated through a scoping review process. This includes information about the population, artforms and settings the toolkits are tailored for, as well as the content included.

Part four guides the user through choosing appropriate tools to build effective arts and health evaluations and includes quantitative, qualitative, participatory, and economic tools, as well as checklists.

The final part explores how to analyse evaluation data, write a report, and how to implement and disseminate findings.
